History of Sawtooth Orthotics and Prosthetics

Sawtooth Orthotics and Prosthetics was established in 1989 by Gretchen Hecht, Certified Orthotist. Gretchen’s daughter, Heidi, was diagnosed with Spina Bifida, a congenital condition which impaired her walking abilities. Gretchen became interested in the field of orthotics and prosthetics as she watched her daughter’s medical journey. As a result, she received her undergrad in pre health at BSU, and moved on to graduate school at the orthotics and prosthetics program at Stanford.

There she developed an international reputation for her talent in pediatric orthotics. She eventually became department head at Stanford’s orthotics program.

From Stanford she moved to University of Michigan, where she headed their department of Orthotics and Prosthetics. She met her husband Dr. Bob Friedman MD, and returned with him to her home state of Idaho. Here she established Sawtooth O & P in 1989 and was joined a year later by Desh Anderson Certified Orthotist, with whom she worked with at University of Michigan. Sawtooth O & P had humble beginnings in a home garage as well as a rented exam room at the Elks Rehabilitation Hospital.

As demand for their services grew, the decision was made to move to 509 West Hays Street in Boise, Idaho. Complimentary peanuts were available for patients to feed the squirrels and affectionate shop cat named, Diamond, was there to snuggle with. In 2000 the decision was made to purchase the old liquor dispensary on Shoreline and 14th in Boise, Idaho. It has grown into a larger, but still modest, operation of 15 enthusiastic employees. All orthotics and prosthetics are fabricated in a lab on-site to ensure quality and matching of the product to the patients specific needs. Sawtooth employees are very proud of their work, and time and time again are told by patients of the excellence and fit of the product. Our goal is to help you reach yours, and we enjoy doing it.

Sawtooth Orthotic & Prosthetics employs only American Board Certified Orthotists and Prosthetists. We are capable of assessing your orthotic and prosthetic needs and conferring with your physician regarding prescription particulars. While we practice under the prescription of an M.D., D.O., or D.P.M., we will be happy to provide a free of charge evaluation for your first visit to ascertain whether your needs can be met by a custom fabricated orthosis or prosthesis.
